The Indian Railways 1st journey began in April 16, 1853. The maiden train set out from Bombay to Thane. The 400 guests travelling in the 14 coaches could scarcely have known what a historic and momentous event they were participating in or how the 33.81 km long journey would change the very face of the Country. Indian Railways has witnessed the country’s historic passage from the colonialism of the British Raj to the exhilaration of independence. Indian Railways has changed with the changing and emerging times and has been the prime mover of economic change in the Country. Indian Railways today is the largest transportation system in the world under a single management. The Indian Railways is carrying approx 50 million people daily from one place to another and this is the largest mode of transportation in our country.
